Kim Nam-joon (Korean: 김남준 ; born September 12, 1994), ameliorate known past his stage name RM (formerly Rap Monster), is a South Korean rapper, songwriter and tape producer. He is the leader of the South Korean male child group BTS. In 2015, he released his beginning solo mixtape, RM. In October 2018, his second mixtape, Mono, was the highest-charting album past a Korean soloist on the Billboard 200 nautical chart, having peaked at number 26. He has recorded with artists such as Wale, Younha, Warren Thousand, Gaeko, Krizz Kaliko, MFBTY, Autumn Out Boy, Main, and Lil Nas Ten.
Early life and didactics
Kim Nam-joon (Korean: 김남준 ) was born on September 12, 1994, in Dongjak District, S Korea, and grew up in Ilsan Commune, Goyang, where his family moved when he was four or v.[ane] [two] [3] He is the elder of two siblings and has a younger sis.[4] Every bit a child, RM largely learned English through watching Friends with his female parent.[5] [6] As a student, he actively wrote poetry and often received awards for his writings.[7] He posted his work to an online poetry website for roughly 1 year, where he received moderate attention. Name
RM selected the proper noun "Rap Monster" during his fourth dimension as an idol trainee. The proper noun derives from the lyrics of a song he wrote, inspired by San Due east's "Rap Genius". Career
2010–2013: Big Hit Entertainment and debut with BTS
In 2009, RM auditioned for Large Deal Records, passing the kickoff round along with Samuel Seo but failing the second round every bit he forgot all his lyrics.[7] However, following the audience, rapper Sleepy exchanged contact information with RM, who he later mentioned to Large Hit Entertainment producer Pdogg.[fifteen] In 2010, Sleepy contacted RM, encouraging him to audition for Big Hit CEO Bang Si-hyuk. 2014–2016: First solo collaborations, RM, and Problematic Men
On Baronial 5, 2014, Large Hit Entertainment released a trailer for BTS' outset studio album Dark & Wild, which was fix to release on the Baronial 20. He featured in the music video for "Bucku Bucku," and also had a cameo in another MFBTY music video for their song, "Blindside Diggy Blindside Bang".[11] [28] RM first formed a lasting working human relationship with MFBTY member Tiger JK during a TV show in 2013 when Tiger JK was promoting his song "The Cure", telling the rapper that he grew upward listening to him.[29]
RM was cast equally a regular on the Korean variety program Problematic Men where cast members are given a diversity of puzzles and problems to solve and work through them by talking about their own thoughts and experiences. 2017–nowadays: 2d mixtape Mono and farther collaborations

For his 25th altogether, RM donated 100 million won to the Seoul Samsun School to help students who are hearing impaired receive music educational activity.[68] In Dec 2020, the Arts Council of Korea named him one of its ten 2020 Patrons of the Arts, in recognition of his donation of 100 meg won to the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art for the printing and distribution of diverse rare art books to schools and libraries in rural and mountainous regions.[69]
